Barbara E. “Barb” Flickinger, age 93, of Aurora, formerly of Elburn and Venice, FL, passed away quietly into the arms of her Lord, Saturday, March 4, 2017. She was born February 25, 1924, in Lanark, IL, to the proud parents of Elmer and Etta (Bolinger) Gaul. Barb grew up in Lanark and attended local schools. She was a proud graduate of Lanark High School with the class of 1943. Barb’s heart was stolen in high school when she began dating Dwight A. Flickinger. She may have received a diploma from Lanark High School, but she received something far more valuable when their two hearts became one on June 20, 1944. They were married in Lanark but began their new life together in the Sterling and Rock Falls area. While Dwight worked at a local gas station, Barb was busy making their house a home. They were blessed with three children, Larry in 1945, Melvin in 1948 and Charyl made their family complete in 1952. By this time they had moved to Elburn and eventually settled on Gates St. In 1978, Barb and Dwight moved to Miramar, FL. When Dwight retired, they moved once more to Venice, FL. After Dwight passed in 1999, Barb continued to live in Venice before relocating back to IL in 2002, settling in Constitution House in Aurora. Although Barb worked several jobs throughout her life, including Campana, drove a Rich-Lee Van for handicapped children, busing them to school in DeKalb, as well as Conley Funeral Home, where she was a friendly face with a sympathetic ear. Barb was a faithful and active member of the Elburn Community Congregational Church for many years and later, the Englewood United Methodist Church. Barb’s hands were rarely idle and did wonders with a needle and thread. A seamstress of the highest caliber, she produced countless wedding and bridesmaid dresses, clothes for her children and thousands of alterations for friends and family alike. There wasn’t an antique store she didn’t like, and the thrill of looking for a “diamond in the rough” was like no other. Barb loved to go to Rockford with her sister and her niece to local flea markets, which gave her another avenue to search for the perfect addition to her home. In fact, she had her own booth at the Sugar Grove Corn Boil Flea Market. Barb is now free to see Dwight once again and continue their love story in halls of Heaven. She now leaves her three children: Larry (Sandra) Flickinger, Melvin (Connie) Flickinger and Charyl (John) Paris; seven grandchildren: Ralph Flickinger, Rodney Flickinger, Ryan (Krissy) Flickinger, Emily Easterday, Brandon (Ashley) Sawyer, Alex (Katrina) Flickinger and Nicholas (Rachel) Flickinger; three great-granddaughters: Sophia, Kayley and Myllycent; one sister, Lavonne Anderson; several nieces and nephews and a family of friends. Barb now joins her loving husband Dwight: her parents, Elmer and Etta Gaul: one granddaughter, Mandy Sawyer; four siblings: Maynard, Marlin and Kenneth Gaul and Beatrice Diehl, who preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 2-3p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2017, with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m., at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL 60119. Private family burial will follow at a later date. Contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
