Date of Death

September 26, 2023

David “Rocky” Rood, age 60, of Elgin, owner of Country Donuts in Elgin, passed away, Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

He was born August 12, 1963, in Elmhurst, IL, to loving parents, Theodore and Sandra Rood.

David grew up in Itasca, IL, and attended local schools. He graduated from Lake Park High School.

He entered the family business of donuts and worked alongside his father and sister making Country Donuts a favorite stop for many in the Elgin area. The original business was established in 1976 in Crystal Lake, IL. They also had a shop in Schaumburg but it was 2008 that they found a home on Rt. 20 in Elgin.

David was a past member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Schaumburg.

David had several loves in life, and one of them was fishing on the family property in Michigan. He cast a line for anything whether it was in a lake or a river. He was handy behind a grill and made the most mouthwatering brisket, BBQ and cowboy beans. In the kitchen, his talent did not falter. His brilliance shone with every dish that was served and quickly made empty. David loved to travel especially to places that had more sunshine and warmth than Illinois. His favorites included the Florida Keys, Mexico, California and more. He had a quick smile and sparkling eye for everyone he met, making friends around every corner. He was the uncle everyone wanted, a brother everyone could love and a son that couldn’t help but make his parents proud. David was blessed with two sons and one daughter who in turn blessed him again with two grandsons and two granddaughters. As life turned from year to year, relationships flexed, waxed and waned, but the ties that bind never broke. His niece Danielle was more like a daughter and when she had children of her own, David had more than enough room in his heart to continue to create everlasting memories with each of them. His “family” also extended to the thousands of dedicated donut denizens that made it a weekly (sometimes daily) habit of stopping by for delicious delectable donuts during the 30 years they were in Schaumburg and in recent years, in Elgin.

He now leaves his parents, Theodore and Sandra Rood; three children: Jim Pagor, Brian (Jolen) Rood and their children Caden and Lucas, and Julia (Jerry) Ruth and their children, Nora and Emma; his sister Jennifer (Nick) Rood Fox; his niece Danielle Schmitz and her children, Lilly and Jake; many cousins, countless friends and admirers across the countryside.
