DOUG STOCKL

Date of Birth

March 5, 1970

Date of Death

February 12, 2024

Doug Stockl, age 53, of Cortland, passed away unexpectedly at home, Monday, February 12, 2024 and now lives in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was born on March 5, 1970 in Sycamore, IL, to Joseph and Doris Stockl.

Doug grew up in Virgil, IL exploring the yard, garage and whole neighborhood with his brothers, trying to stay out of trouble.  He was a curious child who took an early interest in insects, earning the nickname “Douger Bugger” from one of his uncles.  He attended local schools, graduating from Kaneland High School with the class of 1988. After graduation, Doug was ready to go to work and start earning a living.

Doug was employed for over 35 years by Northfield Block Company where his strong work ethic served him well.  He held many positions over the years with Northfield, his last being a heavy equipment operator.

Doug enjoyed his time with family, especially large gatherings where he could be found teasing his nieces and nephews or arguing politics with his siblings. These exchanges were always delivered with a smile and a laugh but also with the passion reflecting how well informed he was about current events.  You could find him standing – never sitting – in “his spot” in the room, waiting for a discussion.  Doug enjoyed many sports but particularly treasured the time alongside his mother watching the Chicago Cubs become World Champions in 2016. For many years, Doug allowed two of his brothers to have a vegetable garden in his back yard.  Often, they could be found together discussing their progress over a Miller Lite, arguing over methods and results.

In his younger years he was rather adventurous, taking on challenges like bungee jumping and scuba diving.  In that period, he also loved getting out on his snowmobile or one of his ATVs.  He was also a “gamer” before it was cool, taking his video games seriously.  He liked to share this passion with others, and was excited to teach his nephew how to master the games.  Later in life, he was content with his truck as his only “toy.”  But instead of racing through the fields, it was a vessel for him to listen and learn about the world, or to enjoy the comedic stylings of Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle.  On more than one occasion he could be heard saying: “Come listen to this!” and you would join him in his truck for a laugh or to learn something new.

He now leaves six siblings: Deb (Roger) Reynolds, Tim Stockl, Dan (Claire) Stockl, Roger (Kim) Stockl, Greg (Kim) Stockl, Russ (Anne) Stockl; many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, cousins and good friends that stood the test of time.

Doug is reunited with his parents, Joseph and Doris Stockl and his stepfather, Clark Reynolds.

  1. I am saddened by this loss in the Stokl family , I remember Doug well running around Virgil , hanging out down at the creek , not getting in trouble ! Doug was definitely adventurous and fearless , my condolences .

  2. Doug, I’m so very sorry to have lost you. My heart hurts knowing your last days were likely painful. I haven’t seen you in forever, but I think of you and pictures flood to mind of you as wiry active kid, impressively scaling your backyard tree and showing off just a wee bit, knowing the Hardt girls weren’t strong enough to follow. At the time, I don’t think you cared for your usual summer buzz hair cut, but you must have grown to like it since in the end you stuck with it. I still see you catching fireflies in the backyard when we were young…. loading the jars up til they looked like a lantern left on. You were a rockstar at it. I’m guessing heaven has lightening bugs if only for you. You must have plenty to catch now. Know you are loved.

  3. My condolences to the whole Stockl family. I was blessed to be able to spend the time I did with Doug.
Doug was a sweet person and enjoyed making others laugh. I recall visiting with Kim and Roger at Doris’s house and the Cub games would be on. They really enjoyed each other’s company. Doug and Doris were not too hard on me for being a Sox fan. Even though our moments together were small, Doug made a big impact on me and others as well. God Bless you all.

  4. Lots of great memories of Virgil, Doug and the Stockl family. 🙏 Extra peace, joy and love to all those who remember Doug. Our prayers are with you all. 🙏

  6. My condolences go out to the entire Stockl family. I remember many Wednesdays after CCD Doug, Russ, my sister, and myself walking to their house where my mom would be visiting with Doris until class was done. My sister called him “Ducky” because she couldn’t pronounce Dougie.
    Rest peacefully Ducky.

  7. What a loss this must be for you all! I have fond memories of Doug and all the Stockls growing up. I always thought Doug was a gentle soul and worked hard to keep up with his older brothers. May the Lord comfort you all in your loss and may your memories of Doug grow fonder in your hearts.

  8. My condolences are with the whole Stockl family!! Sending prayers!! Doug always had a smile on his face.

  9. On behalf of his employer, Northfield Block, Oldcastle APG, our deepest condolences to your family.

The loss of Doug Stockl, our coworker and employee of 35 years, leaves a hole in our lives! We will not be the same without him.

We share the burden of your loss and wish you peace during this trying time.

  10. My thoughts and prayers are with Doug and all of the extended Stockl family. I know Doug’s passing is a terrible loss to you all. My mother, Kay, and Doug’s mother, Doris, weren’t just sisters, they were also friends. And I was fortunate to spend many weekends in Virgil hanging out with my cousins, so I have lots of great memories from our time growing up together. I remember Doug as smiling, laughing, and fun-loving. And Doug may have been the youngest; but he was also unafraid, and he always joined in on whatever adventures or mischief we got ourselves into. In any household with five boys, I suppose the occasional “scuffle” was inevitable, but I recall that Doug held his own against his older brothers. And I always knew that in spite of any quarrels, the Stockl family was very close, and they all loved and cared for each other.
