Date of Death

November 28, 2023

Iris Haug, age 93, of Virgil, IL, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 28, 2023, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. She was born September 21, 1930, in Oak Park, IL, to loving parents, James and Mary Lee Barrett.

Iris grew up in Cortland, IL, and attended local schools. She graduated from Maple Park High School and continued her education first at Northern Illinois University and in later years, Waubonsee Community College.  Iris met her future husband in the halls of her high school. LaVerne fell head over heels for Iris and she was more than happy to catch him. They graduated from walking the aisles in the classroom to a different aisle altogether when they were united in marriage on December 12, 1953. LaVerne and Iris called El Paso, TX, home while he was stationed there for a time while serving in the Army. After returning to civilian life, they moved back to the family farm in Virgil while LaVerne’s parents moved to town. Thousands of memories were “harvested” during the next many years as LaVerne and Iris welcomed three children to make their family complete. Iris was a past member of the Altar and Rosary Society at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Virgil. Iris loved to travel with her girlfriends to Florida, to California to see her brother Keith and his family, and many trips to Long Lake near Spooner, WI where hilarity and fun times ensued.

When she was home, you could find Iris elbow deep in her garden where tomatoes, grapes, apples and more brought hunger pangs and delightful anticipation every season. Iris was famous for apple pie, grape jelly, apple sauce, raspberry jam, and more. Every year she would plant a table full of herbs that were given to countless family and neighbors alike. All of this was in addition to helping to make the farm run smoothly, tending to the animals and fields with attention to detail and love in her heart. During harvest, she made the biggest and best dinners for all who put in a hard days work. The deck was her favorite place to take in the flowers, hummingbirds, (a glass or three of wine) with a full and grateful heart. That heart had room not only for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but so many others who were fortunate to call her “grandma”. She will be missed like no other and never be forgotten.

She regretfully leaves her three children: Joe (Karen) Haug, James (Mary Beth) Haug and Amber (Len Stafford) Jorgensen; 6 grandchildren: Dennis, Glenna, Sara, Adam, Luke, and Atlas (Ava) Figlio-Jorgensen; one “bonus granddaughter” Tiffany; three great-grandchildren: Carson, Ethan and Landon;, three siblings: Keith (Lexy) Barrett, Judy Ehlers and Margie (Paul) Wong; a sister-in-law, Joan Haug; many nieces, nephews, cousins, a farm full of friends and a special friend and caregiver, Bola.

She is joyfully reunited with her husband LaVerne Haug; her parents, James and Mary Lee Barrett and one brother Jimmy Barrett who preceded her in death.
